In June 2022, Irina Lungu will add to her repertoire the role of Imogene in semi-staged concert performances of Vincenzo Bellini’s Il pirata at the Opernhaus Zürich. There will be three shows on June 1, 6 and 10. Iván López-Reynoso will conduct and Natascha Ursuliak will be responsible for the semi staging. The cast also includes Andrew Owens, Konstantin Shushakov, Luis Magallanes, Thomas Erlank, Stanislav Vorobyov and Irène Friedli.
“Imogene can be described as one of those roles that helped to define the characteristics of what would be eventually be known as a dramatic soprano of coloratura”, says Irina Lungu. “Canto di sbalzo (singing comprising extremely wide leaps), agility, a very wide range and expressive legato are essential requirements and it also contains one of the earlier and best-known examples of what would become a common feature in Italian opera: the “mad scene”, which in this case is a masterpiece of technical demands and psychological excavation. It is a big responsability performing this role, since so many of my favorite sopranos have tackled it in legendary performances.”
Imogene is the third Bellini heroine Irina Lungu adds to her repertoire, after having triumphed as Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi and as Elvira in I puritani. She returns to the Opernhaus Zürich after having made her house debut in the title role of La traviata in November 2015 and recent performances in the title part of a new production of Lucia di Lammermoor in June last year.
